Food Picker: What to Eat, Decided in Seconds
Stuck on what to eat? This free food picker ends the "I don't know, what do you want?" loop. Pick your craving categories — desi, BBQ, fast food, Chinese, Italian, healthy, breakfast, dessert — add your own options if you like, and spin for a random meal idea.

How the Food Picker works
- Toggle categories. Keep the cuisines you're in the mood for, switch off the rest. All eight are on by default.
- Add your own (optional). Got leftovers, a favorite dhaba, or a new café to try? Add them as custom options — they join the draw with equal odds.
- Spin. Hit Pick My Food and the picker cycles through dishes before landing on one random meal idea.
- Commit or re-spin. Love it? Dinner's decided. Not feeling it? One tap spins again — though if you re-spin five times, your stomach has already voted.
Why "what to eat" is such a hard question
It's not really about food — it's decision fatigue. By dinnertime you've already made hundreds of small choices, and your brain starts dodging the next one. Psychologists describe decision fatigue as the mental weariness that makes even trivial choices feel heavy — Wikipedia's overview of decision fatigue is a good primer. Add two or more people with different cravings, and "what should we eat?" becomes a negotiation nobody signed up for.
A random food picker short-circuits all of it. It doesn't find the perfect meal — it finds a meal, instantly, and most of the time that's all anyone needed. Funny thing: the moment the wheel lands, you'll often feel a flash of either relief ("yes!") or disappointment ("ugh, not that") — and that flash tells you what you actually wanted all along.
What's inside the picker
Eight craving categories with 56 dishes, from weeknight staples to weekend treats:
- Desi — biryani, nihari, haleem, karahi, daal chawal, chapli kebab, aloo gosht
- BBQ & Grill — tikka, malai boti, seekh kebab, wings, grilled fish
- Fast Food — zinger, shawarma, loaded fries, pizza, club sandwich
- Chinese — chow mein, kung pao chicken, fried rice, manchurian
- Italian — alfredo pasta, lasagna, margherita pizza, risotto
- Healthy — grilled chicken salad, fruit bowl, oats, veggie soup
- Breakfast — halwa puri, aloo paratha, omelette, pancakes
- Dessert — gulab jamun, kulfi, sundae, brownies, kheer
Every dish in your active categories has an equal chance. Custom options you add are mixed in with the same odds — nothing is weighted, nothing is sponsored.
Food Picker vs. the group chat
The classic method: one person suggests biryani, someone vetoes, someone says "anything," twenty minutes pass, everyone orders the same old thing. The group chat optimizes for nobody being unhappy, which usually means nobody being excited either.
The picker optimizes for speed. One spin, one answer, and the debate is over before it starts. Pro tip for couples and roommates: agree beforehand that the pick stands for at least tonight. The picker only works if you respect the spin — much like our Yes or No Wheel, which settles every other kind of tiny dilemma.
Tips for better dinner decisions
- Narrow before you spin. Turn off categories nobody wants tonight — a smaller pool means a pick you'll actually enjoy.
- Add the practical options. "Leftovers" and "cook at home" deserve to be in the draw; they often win on weeknights, and that's fine.
- Check dietary needs yourself. The picker suggests ideas, not medical advice — allergies and dietary restrictions are on you. See our Disclaimer.
- One veto each. If a spin lands on something someone truly can't stand, allow one veto per person per night — then the next spin is final.
- Save favorites. When a pick is a hit, add that restaurant or dish as a custom option so it keeps appearing in future draws.
Food Picker FAQs
How does the food picker choose?
It builds a pool from your selected categories plus any custom options, then picks one uniformly at random using your browser's cryptographic random generator. Every option has exactly equal odds.
Can I add my own restaurants or dishes?
Yes — type them in the custom box, one per line. They join the draw with the same odds as everything else, marked as "Your pick."
Is it really random, or does it favor some foods?
Truly uniform. No sponsorships, no weighting, no "featured" dishes. If biryani keeps winning, that's probability having fun with you.
Does it work for groups?
Perfectly. Toggle the categories everyone agrees on, spin once, and the debate ends. For picking who chooses the restaurant, try our Name Picker Wheel.
Is my data saved anywhere?
No. Categories, custom options, and history live only in your open tab. Nothing is uploaded or stored — see our Privacy Policy.
Is the food picker free?
Yes — free forever, no account, no sign-up, works on phones and desktops. Nothing is tracked or saved.
