How to use the online Magic 8-Ball

1. Think of a yes-or-no question. The ball answers best when the question has two sides — "Should I…?", "Will it…?", "Is it time to…?"
2. Type it in. Writing the question down focuses the mind (and gives you a fun history to scroll back through).
3. Shake. Hit the button and watch the ball rattle — the answer floats up in the window a second later.
4. Accept, laugh, or re-ask. Got "Reply hazy"? The classics allow a re-shake. Got "My reply is no"? Well… the ball has spoken.

Our ball uses the exact traditional set — 10 affirmative, 5 non-committal, 5 negative — each equally likely on every shake:

Notice the design: half the answers are yes, a quarter are no, and a quarter dodge the question entirely — which is exactly why the 8-ball feels wiser than a coin. It has a sense of drama.

A tiny history of the Magic 8-Ball

The Magic 8-Ball dates back to the 1940s, when it was invented as a fortune-telling device and later shrunk into the billiard-ball shape everyone recognizes. It became a toy-box icon through the second half of the 20th century and has been answering questions — seriously and otherwise — for more than 70 years. The physical toy works with a floating icosahedron (a 20-sided die) inside dark blue liquid; our digital version skips the liquid and keeps the suspense. When to ask the 8-ball

• Tiny dilemmas: dessert or no dessert, text them now or later, movie A or movie B.
• Breaking a tie: when two options feel exactly equal, let the ball's drama decide.
• Party laughs: pass the phone around and let everyone ask one question — the non-committal answers get the biggest reactions.
• Creative blocks: writers and artists use random prompts to jolt loose; an 8-ball answer is as good a spark as any.
